SUMMARY:Flora\, Fauna & Food: A History of Urban Gardening in New Orleans
DESCRIPTION:This tasty exhibit takes a look at how New Orleans residents have appropriated public spaces for farming\, in the pursuit of academic\, entrepreneurial\, and community endeavors. Covering the course of the last 130 years\, "Flora\, Fauna & Food" illustrates how scientists have experimented with sugarcane and tomatoes in urban spaces that were outgrowths of New Orleans' two world fairs\; it looks at how\, at the turn of the twentieth century\, restaurants such as Kolb's German Tavern had their own farms in the city\; and it brings us to the present day with Crisp Farms\, a creation of two neighbors who transformed an abandoned\, refuse-filled Bywater neighborhood lot\, into a vibrant community gathering place where neighbors could supplement their groceries with fresh produce and where children can learn about permaculture and sustainability.
